This device keeps the file flat and your fingers away from the teeth. It is far safer and more accurate than freehanding a file in your fingers over aggressive pointy teeth. Put a flat file in the jointer and screw it in firmly. Run this along the tops of your saw teeth to even out the teeth and get them in line so none are out of joint. Any  teeth out of joint cannot align with their fellows. And that means your energy is wasted and you may buckle your saw. If you have access to a table saw, jointers are fairly easily made, so do consider the DIY approach before you spend money here.  And I credit Dolly Chapman for this simple, elegant solution ☺
